In 2003, Tom founded eCourier.co.uk – the online courier company with the purple vans and served as eCourier’s CEO from 2004 until 2008, overseeing the company’s growth to £7.5m turnover and 250+ staff (including couriers) and raising £8m in equity funding from angels and a VC. With a professional management team in place, Tom left eCourier in 2008 to found Shutl. Tom serves on the advisory boards of YumShare and BookingBug. Outside of business, Tom is a founding trustee of FoundationStone, a charitable trust that invests in start-up charities.

For my first startup eCourier.co.uk (founded in 2004), getting top senior talent was a long & painful process punctuated by expensive ads and extortionate recruitment consultants. Hiring a CFO cost us around £25k. Hiring a CEO (when I was moving on) cost at least twice that. And even after making the investment, results were far from assured.

For the CFO vacancy, a quirky ad in the FT got us a ton of great candidates… however when push came to shove our short-list saw us as too risky a proposition, especially when compared with what the market was offering in risk-free salary. I enlised my co-founder & CTO and we wined, dined and begged our top 3 CFO candidates… all without success. One seduced by the real-estate boom went to Colliers CRE, another consulted his father who told him it was too risky (he ended up joining 3i!) and the last one said we needed more £ and joined Multimap, which was swiftly bought by Microsoft (he was right on the £ btw). We ended up hiring a recommendation from within our network.

To fill the CEO position (when I was leaving) our board hired a headhunter on a retained search (on insistence of the VC) in order to ensure a hire. From the 5 candidates shortlisted, only 1 wanted the job. Unsurprisingly he got it… on his terms.

We had a relatively high profile business (slew of awards & press), sales in the millions (had been growing at 20-30% per month for first 3 years) AND £2m+ VC investment in the bank… and yet recruiting senior managers was still a challenge. Was it us, or were things even harder for those that were not in as fortunate a position?

Fast forward 2 years… Given my previous experience I was a little apprehensive when Shutl needed a full-time CTO. On paper we were undoubtedly a riskier concern: tiny team, no (finished) product, no clients, no investors, etc… we also did not have the means to pursue either of the former recruitment strategies. This proved to be a blessing in disguise.

We hired a CTO in July and it took 3 months. The process was painful but only because we had to choose from a number of fantastically over-qualified candidates, all of whom wanted the job. Our only expenditure was a £20 TechCrunch Europe CrunchBoard ad.

So what had changed?

Admittedly this was a different (and more exciting) business (well, I would say that). However, this was also a very different market… and there were new tools available to access the market without use of an intermediary.

I wrote the spec, posted the CrunchBoard ad, sent out a link to ads on facebook, linkedin, plaxo & twitter. TechFluff videoblogger Hermione Way and a couple of others possessing 2.0 fan-clubs reposted. I also joined just about every relevant LinkedIn group (and a dozen not so relevant) and posted the job there, as well as emailing out to a couple of entrepreneur lists. Within 2 weeks we had 260 applications. Obviously there was a fair amount of chaff, but not nearly as much as had anticipated.

Not unexpectedly I was also bombarded by recruitment consultants. I treated them all equally and told them: if they had someone that fitted the profile, send me a CV and we would consider, but only subject to my (not their) terms- a copy of which I provided them. I told them that they could not advertise the role themselves and I was not prepared to speak to any of them let alone meet them. Not one dared to propose a retained search.

We filtered CVs and interviewed around 50 NDA’d applicants. This was time-consuming but gave me a great feel for the market- what was out there and what it cost. This also helped me to refine the requirement. It also narrowed the field to 12 who received a disclosure pack (business plan, SDD, code, model etc). After a week to digest, we then sent out an RFP. The responses required some real time & effort and separated out the really serious candidates.

Once reduced down to the final 5 we needed to narrow the field further and asked them where they would come out on tension between salary & options. 2 of our top 3 came out at less than 50% of the salary we had originally been considering (with higher equity packages). At this point we could almost have gone with a reverse auction.

After dilligencing references provided & found (thank you LinkedIn!) and not insignificant umming and erring, we made a very tough decision. Our final few candidates had been CTOs respectively of a well known mobile phone operator, local directory site & top 3 ratings agency. All of them were in their jobs. It was a tough decision because ordinarily I would have been ecstatic with any one of them.

And the candidate that got the job… well, he was someone I had been at university with 8+ years ago (and hadn’t spoken to since). He is based in the US, and saw the posting on LinkedIn. He certainly wouldn’t have come up from any ad/recruiter. His proposal was far and away the best and to avoid nepotism had our Chairman (Simon Murdoch) & tech advisors (Jay Bregman & Glenn Shoosmith) heavily involved in the process. We made the appointment last month and could not be happier.

I admit that a CTO is a different hire from CEO & CFO, however in a tech business no less important. Had I been in the market for either of them I am confident that the same investment and process would have yielded very similar results.

What I take from this experience is:

1. The recruitment industry (in its current form) has been dealt a deathblow blow by social media. Provided content is good and you make a bit of an effort, your audience will find you without a recruiter or expensive ad. To add value a recruiter or ad must be cheap enough & targeted enough to save you the time involved with making good content & effort.

2. There cannot be a better time than now to startup. Repeating what I told Oli Barret yesterday.

“Talent, the most critical factor to a start-up’s success, is the cheapest and most abundant it has ever been.”

3. I probably could have improved my ROI exponentially by not forking out £20 for a CB ad – but at least that created the link which could be passed around by social media.

The Care and Feeding of Headhunters and Recruiters

n 1981, I entered the fascinating (?) world of high-tech recruiting. I wish someone had given these guidelines to all those whom I tried to place; the process would have gone a lot more smoothly. So to save countless headhunters/recruiters/personnel gurus from trying to commit Hari-Kari after dealing with yet another uncooperative candidate, and to save even just one candidate/job-seeker/potential employee from wanting to say "sayonara" to the world after another totally unfruitful encounter with a recruiter, I commit these words.

Ground rules:

A personnel counselor waits for you to walk in the door. Then he or she matches you up with a job order that he or she already has or finds a job that fits your specs. The first person I ever interviewed was an electronic tech. I asked him what he really wanted to do if he could have any job in the world, and he said that he'd really like to get back into television production. I called a video production company, presented three points about Don, and got an appointment for him. He was offered the job. I closed my first placement four days after my hire at the agency.

A recruiter or headhunter is hired by a corporation to find exactly the person the company needs. Most recruiters are hired for their sales abilities. A few agencies hire someone with extensive experience in a field (e.g., electrical engineering) and teach him or her how to recruit and place. Because recruiters know the field, they can tell whether the candidate is "blowing sunshine up their skirts" or if the candidate actually knows the topic.

Rule 1: It is really OK to talk to a recruiter, even if he or she calls you at work -- just don't start ranting on about what a benighted organization currently employs you. Give the headhunter your home number. The recruiter should ask a good time to call. You can answer questions with "earlier" or "later" until you agree on a time. Now, all you have to do is to convince your teenage daughter not to be on the one and only phone line at home at that time. The fact that this recruiter sought you out should be taken as a compliment.

Rule 2: Never assume that the recruiter actually knows what you do -- let alone the nuances of what you do. Explain what you do in small words and slowly since this person is probably taking notes.

I'll give you an example of the process of informing the recruiter. About two years ago, I orchestrated an Internet jobhunt for a close friend who is a UNIX systems administrator. I posted his resume, responded to job postings for him, and investigated Web sites for him on weekends. During the weekdays, he had the glorious opportunity (?) to return calls to headhunters. (Quick side note: While it's cute having your 5-year-old twins tape the outgoing message on your answering machine, that message is not what you want a recruiter or prospective new employer to hear first. Record a professional message. Once you're hired, the twins can come back.)

At least half of the recruiters presented jobs that had nothing to do with UNIX in any way, shape, or form. Another 48 percent had no idea that a UNIX systems administrator with AIX working on an RS/6000 could not be absolutely brilliant on Sun Solaris right now. The last 2 percent were willing to actually listen to Jerry, find out what he knew and didn't know, and then -- lo and behold -- actually present him to jobs for which he was qualified. But Jerry had to spend time educating one recruiter. One way was in a bullet format e-mail cover letter of career and education highlights. This effort paid off; the recruiter knew how to present Jerry to his best advantage, and Jerry eventually got the job at a 25 percent salary increase over his previous job.

You're probably wondering what I sent, aren't you? [Keep reading.]

Rule 3: The theory on how and what to put into this cover letter accompanying your Internet resume is:

1. Keep it as short as possible so that it fits on a computer screen without having to scroll down.
2. Use bullets.

Here's an example:

My name is Jerry W------. I am responding to your job posting for a UNIX Systems Administrator. Briefly my career includes, but is not limited to:

* M.S. Computer Information Sciences, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
* Ten years as a UNIX Systems Administrator in AIX, DG/UX, AT&T System V.>/li>
* Rapid learning curve as demonstrated by becoming literate on AIX in one week based on my earlier experiences.
* Integrated an AIX UNIX system with an Ethernet TCP/IP Windows 95/NT network within 21 days of my hire.
* Converted to PCs, which emulated terminals, thereby eliminating dumb terminals and two systems on each employee's desk.
* Wrote and presented papers at international conferences on computer security issues.

Since I am employed, please call me at home at --- --- ---- after 5 PM EDT or e-mail me at ---------@----. -----. My resume follows.

Rule 4: Realize how recruiters work and work with them, if at all possible. Similar to real estate in which you have a buyer and a seller, any placement process consists of the job order and the candidate. The agents for the buyer and the seller split the commission. If one person represents the buyer and the seller, that one person splits the commission with nobody. In this game, if one recruiter produces the job order (a contract with Corporation A to find and hire Person B) and the candidate (the erudite individual taking the job), the recruiter keeps the entire fee. (OK, the owner of the recruiting firm is probably retaining a huge percentage of this fee.) If you are represented by Recruiter A in Atlanta and the Company is represented by Recruiter C in Concord, then the two recruiters split the fee paid by the company.

In a very few cases, the placement office may try to charge you a fee. If the recruiting firm does so, it has to alert you before your interview with the client company. My advice: Run for the hills! You should not pay anyone a fee when thousands of headhunters are out there eager to do this job for you for free.

Recruiter A will brief you before the interview and debrief you afterwards. Recruiter C will present your qualifications to the company and debrief the firm after the interview. Then the two recruiters will share notes and try to convince you to take the job and the company to give it to you.

That's in best of all possible worlds. What can go wrong? Recruiter C may turn up his or her own candidate and, in an effort to keep the entire fee, sabotage you. Is there anything you can do to prevent this sabotage? Not really.

You may wonder how a recruiter finds a candidate. First, the recruiter gets a job order and a detailed description of the perfect candidate. A headhunter friend in El Paso had a job order for a person with experience in wireless communications. Knowing that Motorola developed garage-door openers and that the company was a bit vulnerable to imminent layoffs, he found a division in Arizona and the man who designed the communication system for garage-door openers. Before you could say, "EE-HAH!" (Texan for "Yippee!"), a placement was made.

P.S. It's not unusual for the job order to change after you are presented with the opportunity. If the recruiter doesn't understand what the job requires, you may be presented for a job that does not exist. If you don't fit the new and improved job description
, don't worry about it; there's a better job waiting for you.

Rule 5: Never send your resume to more than one person within an office or chain of headhunters (e.g., Management Recruiters, Inc.) Why? See #4. If you send your resume to Dave and Karen in same office, and they both present you to Terry, who holds the job order, guess what happens out of your line of sight? A huge fight! Dave and Karen both want to represent you, the candidate. A recruiting fee usually runs 30-50 percent of your first year's salary. Therefore, on a $60,000 salary, the fee is a minimum of $18,000. Can you see why they are fighting? I knew you could see that, boys and girls. What usually happens? One of three things:

1. If the boss is a Gandhi of the recruitment world, then Karen and Dave may split half of the fee.
2. A neutral person will check the incoming e-mails to see to whom you sent your resume first. And the winner is…
3. Most likely, if you don't get the job, no one in the office will work with you. Why? To avoid another fight. And recruiters often snub candidates who appear to be so unconscious that they send their resume twice to the same office.

Rule 6: Keep in contact with the headhunter. If he or she thinks you want to work with him or her, the recruiter is more likely to make an effort to place you. E-mail any recruiter who contacts you at least once a week - unless the recruiter has an IQ less than 90.

Rule 7: Keep putting your resume out there. The right job is looking for you right now. You just have to be willing to look and keep looking until you find it.

If you care for your recruiter by feeding him or her easy bites of information (information that may be passed on by the recruiter to the client company with no modification, thus making the recruiter's job that much easier), you have just increased your chances of getting hired.

Why Recruiters are Worth What They Charge.

"When I need a heart by-pass, rest assured that I won't select my surgeon on the basis of what he charges."

That's what an ailing executive recently opined when he was informed by his doctor about his arterial blockage problems.

Why then are corporate executives so tightfisted when dealing with what is so commonly thought of as the "heartbeat" of their companies . . . top-talent?

Companies think very little about paying the often excessive fees charged by their outside accounting and legal firms . . . or even to the gaggle of consultants who promise cost-cutting and streamlining miracles in other areas of operations.

Yet, when faced with brain drains, talent deficiencies or the need to replace an employee with a better one, their thoughts too often turn to parsimony. This K-Mart mentality belies and contradicts their stated objectives to "hire the best," especially at pecking order levels below the "big picture" executive suite inhabitants.

Of course recruiting fees can vary from firm to firm but, when they do, you will almost always find that those on the low side are sure to exclude some very key ingredients of the process, all of which are vital to providing the indispensable services necessary to satisfy the needs of the employer.

So why are recruiters worth what they charge? Just a few of the often unspoken reasons are:

Expertise
Nobody knows the employment market-place better than a professional recruiter . . nobody! In-house human resourcers, no matter how effective, view the marketplace through an imperfect or misrepresentative prism and tunnel vision is their occupational hazard.

Just as physicians are cautioned against treating members of their own families, so too is it folly for an in-house H/R professional to believe that they have an undistorted and unbiased picture of the employment landscape. They are vulnerable to the pressures of internal politics and cultural dimensions which do not hinder the outsider.

Street-smart recruiters already know the neighborhood, including the unlisted addresses so often overlooked by the insiders.

Cast a Wider Net
A professional fisherman will always have more to show than a weekend angler. Recruiters are in the marketplace day in and day out. They know the unfished coves, reefs and inlets that are unknown to others. The job-hunter bookshelves are filled with lore about the "hidden job market." The same holds true for professional recruiters who have a detailed roadmap to the hidden talent sources which will never be accessed by newspaper ads, alumni associations, applicant databases, the Internet or any of the other more familiar sources of people.

There are occasional pearls through these sources (and someone inevitably wins the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes too) but you have to shuck an awful lot of smelly oysters to find them. Recruiters only give you oysters proven to contain pearls. Your only job is to determine which pearl is the best.

Cost
There is a misconception among employers that the cost of a hire equals the cost of the ads run to attract the person hired. Nothing could be further from reality.

Try adding these to the true cost and you'll see just how cost effective an outside recruiter can be:

Salaries and benefits of the employment recruiting staffs plus those of the line managers involved in the hiring activity (who are not productive in their normal job pursuits when they're out recruiting); travel, lodging and entertainment expenses of in-house recruiters; source development costs; overhead expenses including but not limited to telephone, office space, postage, PR literature, applicant database maintenance, reference checking, clerical costs to correspond with the hundreds of unqualified respondents, etc.

Unbiased Third Party Input
Contrary to what some believe, recruiters don't try to fit square pegs into round holes. A recruiter's stock-in-trade is their integrity and their reputation for finding someone better than a company could have found for themselves.

For a mid to senior-level executive, the average recruiter may develop a "long list" of a hundred or more possibilities. Each must be called and evaluated against the position specifications as well as the personality "fit" with the company and the people with whom they will ultimately work. Once this is winnowed down to the "short list" an even more intensive interviewing process beings to narrow the search to a panel of finalists for review by the client.

This process is not, as some believe, simply romping through the file cabinets or putting the job opening out to others on the recruiter's network with crossed fingers that someone good will show up.

It is highly unlikely that a professional recruiter will be plowing new ground with your opening. They deal within spheres of influence far more familiar with your needs than any internal recruiter and, more often than not, view the finalists as people who are competent to solve client problems rather than just fill an open slot in the organizational chart.

Because they want to do business with you again and again, they are looking for (and challenging you to excellence by hiring) the "truly exceptional" rather than the "just satisfactory" so often settled for by in-house hirers.

Confidentiality
Advertising or otherwise publicly proclaiming an opening, aside from its cost and demonstrated ineffectiveness for sensitive senior level openings, often creates anxiety and apprehension among the advertiser's current employees who wonder why they aren't being considered or worry about newcomer transition problems. Just as often it alerts competitors to a current weakness or void within the company.

Speed
The recruiting process is always faster through a search professional who is continually tapped into the talent marketplace than one having to start the process from scratch. For every day that a key opening remains unfilled, a company's other employees must grudgingly do double duty. And this doesn't factor in the profit opportunities or competitive advantages lost to a company because a position remains unfilled or is done on a part-time basis by others less qualified.

Post-Hire Downtime
Not only is speed an essential part of the professional recruiter's process, the ability to locate a person who can immediately "hit the ground running" with a minimum of "ramp-up time" saves time after the hire. All too often, a hire selected through less effective sources offering a smaller talent pool requires several months of expensive training and orientation.

Reality
Professional recruiters often recognize and have a duty to inform clients that they may be mistaken as to the type of person sought, the salary required to attract them or the possibilities that the solution might just lie in areas outside the traditional target industries . . . something an internal recruiter is politically disinclined to do. Too many hirers fail to understand that a professional recruiter's primary function is not necessarily to fill a slot but to provide the right candidate to solve a problem.

Negotiation
Master negotiator Herb Cohen says that "negotiation is the analysis of information, time and power to affect behavior . . . the meeting of needs (yours and others') to make things happen the way you want them to." As a buffer and informed intermediary, the professional recruiter is better able to blend the needs and wants of both parties to arrive at a mutually beneficial arrangement without the polarizing roadblocks which too frequently materialize in face-to-face dealings.

Even after 100's (hundreds) of article on the Internet about increasing Google page rank, it was difficult for me to right a content which stand apart from other article on "Increase google page rank" Articles. I have added almost all the possible tips to increase google page rank. The tips are quick, easier and faster and some of the tips are long lasting, time consuming and some cost incurred. I would say my article stands apart because of the detail note on PageRank™ algorithm (a key component). I know enough to describe Google PageRank in relatively simple terms (such that you can impress your friends and family with your new-found knowledge).

I am sure almost all my reader know what is SEO, but i have seen one of reader to ask about SEO so below is the brief description on SEO for readers who don't know much about SEO.

WHAT IS SEO? OR WHAT IS SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION)

"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines for targeted via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search resultskeywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines."

Put quite simply, SEO is the process of optimizing your website for the search engines (like Google). By “optimizing”, I mean attempting to make it such that searches for specific phrases rank your website higher in the search results than other websites. There are lots of good reasons to want to rank higher, but for businesses, the primary reason is to generate good leads for your offering. Millions of people use Google every day looking for a product, service or information. Some of these people might be potential clients looking for your particular offering. There are two ways for you to show up on the results page when users are doing a search. The first is paid advertising (I’ll talk about this in a future article) and the second is what is known as “organic” (or “natural”) search. The natural search results are listed free and are dependent on Google’s estimation of how relevant and credible your website is. Natural search results are my favorite kind, because you don’t have to pay money for them, and they often works better than paid advertising. I liken this to the difference between getting mentioned in a magazine article and purchasing an ad in that same magazine.

Google’s Search Algorithm

The PageRank algorithm assigns a PageRank score to each of more than 25 billion webpages. The algorithm models the behavior of an idealized random Web surfer This Internet user randomly chooses a webpage to view from the listing of available webpages. Then, the surfer randomly selects a link from that webpage to another webpage. The surfer continues the process of selecting links at random from successive webpages until deciding to move to another webpage by some means other than selecting a link. The choice of which webpage to visit next does not depend on the previously visited webpages, and the idealized Web surfer never grows tired of visiting webpages. Thus, the PageRank score of a webpage represents the probability that a random Web surfer chooses to view the webpage.

Though Google’s algorithm is extremely sophisticated, it boils down to something like this:

Search Ranking = Relevance * PageRank

Relevance is basically the measure of how your website (or more accurately one of your web pages) matches the search phrase the user has entered. Measuring relevance is a relatively sophisticated process, but it boils down to some fundamentals like the title of the page, words on the page and how frequently they occur, etc. So, if your home page has things like “technical selling”, it drives up the relevance for this particular search. The reason my blog article is ranked #1 on Google for “successful technical selling” is in no small part because of the title OF ONE OF MY ARTICLES (“Successful Selling Tips For The Technically Gifted”). Basically, Google figures out what your page is “about” by looking at it’s content (and by looking at other sites with similar content that are linking to yours). It then uses this to figure out how relevant you are for a particular search phrase.

TIPS ON INCREASING GOOGLE PAGE RANK

1) Increase your content and get it indexed and crawled by Google. The more original content and pages your site has, the higher will be the pagerank of your site. Update site as frequently as possible with quality content.

2) Exchange Links. You want to exchange links with other websites or blogs that have similar content as yours. You contact a site and ask if they would like to display your link information, and in exchange you will display theirs. We have done this on our site with over 3,500 different sites and it was worked wonderfully for us. We basically exchange with everybody, but that is because our site handles a variety of topics. Find sites to exchange links with and contact them. The more links you have, the better off you will.

3) Put text navigation links to all your pages on the home page. This can be done in the New Blogger with the Archive widget using the Hierarchy module which provides titles of all your pages. In your blog Settings------>Archives------>Enable Post Pages----->Set to Yes and ------>Save Settings. This will give each post on your blog it's own page. Every time you create a post you will create a new page. Do not have page URLs with numbers and question marks (dynamically loaded pages).

4) One Way Links. Unlike a link exchange where two sites link to each other, a one way link is just what it sounds like. It is a link from a web site or blog that only links to you, however you are not required to link back to them. A good way to achieve this is to create them. There are a number of advertising websites out there that allow you to post an ad for free. Craigslist, AdPost and Indocquent are just a few Post your link information to them all. These are your one way links. One way links carry more weight in the Google algorithm them swapped links. However, combining the two will increase it that much more

5) Link to your home page from every page in your blog. This is done by making your blog header click able to the home page.

6) Father Time. Time is your best friend and your enemy here. Although it has never been confirmed, rumor has it that the Google algorithm includes a system check in there for the length of time your web site or blog has been around. With good reason if you think about it. Thousands of website are created daily, many disappear after a month. It would be a strain on Google`s indexing system to constantly weed out these sites that never make it. Therefore, the longer a site has been around the favorably it is looked upon. So as you can see time is your friend if your site has been around awhile, and your enemy if it is fairly new.

7) If you want to put links on the home page yet prevent them from leaching your page rank you can put them in a link list widget and add the rel='nofollow' tag to the code. This will prevent Google spiders from following the links but your visitors can still click on them and visit the other sites. To do this login to Dashboard and click on Layout. Then click on Edit Html subtab of Template tab. First backup your template. Then put a check in Expand Widgets Template box atthetop and scroll down to following code in your Link List widget :

8) Submit your sitemap to Google. Register your site at Google Webmaster Tools.

9) Free Tools/Graphics/Templates when distributed with a link to your site will give your site a higher Page Rank due to all those inbound links. A prime example is statcounter.com whose Page rank is 10 (highest) because of those links from counters installed in millions of blogs. Distributors of free Wordpress templates also have a high page rank. Submitting articles to article directories also has a similar effect.

1) Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog as your homepage. This is the most basic step.

2) Have a few friends download the Alexa Toolbar and surf your site.

3) Put up an Alexa rank widget on your website. I did this a few days ago and receive a fair amount of clicks every day. According to some doshdosh, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor. You can download the Alexa Rank Widget from here .

4) Participate in many webmaster forums which allow you to place your site in your signature.

5) Encourage others to use the Alexa toolbar. This includes friends, fellow webmasters as well as site visitors/blog readers. Be sure to link to Alexa’s full explanation of their toolbar and tracking system so your readers know what installing the toolbar or extension entails.

6) Write articles about webmaster topics and distribute them around the web.

7) Work in an Office or own a company? Get the Alexa toolbar or SS Firefox extension installed on all computers and set your website as the homepage for all browsers. Perhaps it will be useful to note that this may work only when dynamic or different IPs are used.

8) Optimize pages of your site for Alexa and related phrases.

9) Write or Blog about Alexa. Webmaster and bloggers love to hear about ways to increase their Alexa rank. They’ll link to you and send you targeted traffic (i.e. visitors with the toolbar already installed). This gradually has effects on your Alexa ranking.

10) Buy ads on search engines to increase your traffic. Your Alexa traffic rankings will increase.

11) Flaunt your URL in webmaster forums. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback. It’s also a good way to give back to the community if you have useful articles to share with others.

12) Get StumbledUpon or Digg. Social Network members are more likely to have an Alexa toolbar on their browsers and a flood of traffic from these sites can skyrocket your Alexa rank!

13) Use Alexa redirects on your website URL. Try this: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.heenamehta.blogspot.com . Replace heenamehta.blogspot.com with the URL for your website. Leave this redirected URL in blog comments as well as forum signatures. This redirect will count a unique IP address once a day so clicking it multiple times won’t help. There is no official proof that redirects positively benefit your Alexa Rank, so use with caution.

14) Optimize your popular posts. Got a popular post that consistently receives traffic from the search engines? Include a widget/graph at the bottom of the post, link to your Alexa post or use Alexa redirection on your internal URLs.

RSS is an XML-based format for content distribution. Webmasters create an RSS file containing headlines and descriptions of specific information. While the majority of RSS feeds currently contain news headlines or breaking information the long term uses of RSS are broad.

RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites.

In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.
